While there are some unexplained loose ends in the story, ‘A Castle for Christmas’ is an endearing, cheesy and cute Christmas romance. Elwes switches from crabby duke to charmingly romantic easily through the course of the film. And lots of Christmas cheer and décor.īrooke Shields is effortlessly delightful and shares a cute chemistry with Cary Elwes. A picturesque setting, the good-looking lead pair at odds with each other right from the start even as sparks fly between them, a set of well- meaning friends (Lee Ross steps in as Myles trusted aide Thomas), an obstacle to fulfilling the romance – but not one too big that it can’t be solved quickly enough. ‘A Castle for Christmas’ ticks off all the staples of a Christmas romance.
The knitting gang of Helen (Tina Grey), Angus (Stephen Oswald), Maise (Andi Osho) and Rhona (Eilidh Loan) at Dun Dunbar Inn are now Sophie’s close-knit group and it looks like she isn’t going anywhere soon. Although, with Sophie’s novels already having an ardent following in Dun Dunbar, she soon finds herself surrounded by friends and support. And that money would be enough to see him through another year. While Sarah takes up the challenge and moves in, Myles plans to make this time for her so difficult that she will give up and leave, forfeiting her deposit. That Sarah must pay the deposit and live in the castle for three months to learn about the maintenance of the place, before he hands her the keys. Despite needing the money desperately, Myles refuses to sell, finally only relenting after putting forth a condition. Sophie offers to buy the castle, given that her family, the McGuinty’s, were at one time the groundskeepers of the palace and she feels connected to the history of the place. Of course, once there, she meets a grumpy duke, Myles (Cary Elwes), who owns a castle but can hardly maintain its upkeep, despite opening it out for tours, weddings and even having a gift shop for souvenirs. There are many books, and Osho spoke on so many mystics and flowering of consciousness. As speculations fly that her bitter divorce a year back may have led to Sophie’s uncharacteristic display of anger towards her romantic hero in her book and off it, she decides to take off to Dun Dunbar, a village in Scotland to ride out this period. As public sentiments run high, so does Sophie’s emotions as she has a full-blown melt down on camera during her interview on the Drew Barrymore Show.
